Border Patrol agents seize nearly 8,400 pounds of marijuana

EDINBURG, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Rio Grande Valley Sector seized more than $6.6 million worth of marijuana over the past weekend.


The largest seizure took place at the Falfurrias Checkpoint on Friday when agents arrested a man suspected of attempting to smuggle nearly 3,500 pounds of marijuana through the checkpoint. During an immigration inspection, a Border Patrol K-9 alerted to the presence of marijuana in a tractor-trailer. Upon further inspection, agents found the drugs hidden in the trailer.


Another large seizure took place early Saturday morning near Los Ebanos when agents assigned to the Rio Grande City Station spotted a vehicle speeding away from the Rio Grande. The vehicle was discovered abandoned a short time later. Inside the vehicle agents found nearly 1,400 pounds of marijuana.


Additional seizures brought the total amount of marijuana seized from Friday through Sunday to nearly 8,400 pounds.
