Luis Perez-Barocela, 38, has been convicted and sentenced for smuggling thousands of pounds of marijuana into the United States via the Falfurrias border checkpoint.

Barocela was found to be responsible for providing truck drivers with up to $55,000 to drive what they thought was around 700 pounds of marijuana through the border checkpoint along with their usual load of produce. Barocela was helping the drivers navigate the border patrol by keeping in touch with them with a cell-phone while he remained in a passenger vehicle nearby.

After release, Barocela faces 5 years of supervised release.
